Nike's Impact on Environment and Society

The reason I chose this company is to prove just how big their enviromental and impact of society is. There is a lot of underlying information that you don't know about them like the factories in the poor countries where they pay their people little to nothing, barely enough to survive.

I choose this company because the enviroment is in such a weak state and BP just happens to add on to this. The company does not feel any remorse for damaging the enviorment. They only did when everyone noticed the BP spill and the damage it caused to the animals. I will focus on what they caused and what we as people living in a country that has passed its capacity level can do too help.

Sex Trafficking in Seattle

Tue, 05/07/2013 - 15:43

I spent my last Friday night (with co-worker Melissa!) at the SIFF Uptown theater seeing a film called Eden, which was a true story about sex trafficking in the United States. The film itself was excellent- it had debuted at the Seattle International Film Festival last year, and I wasn’t at all surprised to realize afterward that main actress was awarded the Golden Space Needle Award for Best Actress.

SIFF arranged a post-film discussion after the film’s screening, which I was excited to stay for. I love how much I can learn from watching films and I especially love how talking about films afterward can really enhance my understanding. The panel for Eden was incredible, and included a Washington State Senator, Assistant US attorney, a representative from the Organization for Prostitution Survivors, and a YouthCare worker.

It was eye-opening to see the extreme commitment to combatting human trafficking (which includes many trafficking issues besides only sex trade) that is happening on both the government and non-profit levels. I was especially surprised to hear that sex trafficking is a big issue in Seattle itself- the representative from the Organization for Prostitution Survivors made great points that we often don’t even realize what’s happening in our own city when we frame human trafficking as an international issue. It also struck me that she was so much more comfortable explaining how she was “prostituted” by a “pimp” than referring to “sex trafficking” or “trade” as the government-affiliated representatives were. A third point that she emphasized what that people often think of sex trafficking as an issue that mainly affects minors, but prostitutes that are 18+ years old have rarely chosen their lifestyle- they’ve likely been part of the system since they were underage and absolutely deserve society’s attention and help for breaking free from their unsafe situations.

Hearing from the panel reminded me that sometimes we need to be willing to go out of our way to see what issues are right in front of us. While human trafficking anywhere is horrifying, being able to focus on fixing the problem (whether through the legal system or reshaping our culture) on a local level opens important doors for us be part of bringing positive change to our community.

Cool thoughts on feminism!

Tue, 04/23/2013 - 14:01

“Women make natural anarchists and revolutionaries, because they’ve always been second-class citizens, kinda having had to claw their way up...I mean, who made up all the rules in the culture? Men—white male corporate society. So why wouldn’t a woman want to rebel against that?”

This quote is from this Elle article about Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth.  I'm not a huge fan of the band or anything, but a friend posted this quote on facebook and I had to look into it.  The article brings up some great points about feminism and consent.  I really liked this quote because it relates well to us talking about groups of people and power, especially regarding gender and race.

What do you think about the quote?

Talk Back: Birthday Song

Wed, 04/17/2013 - 15:04
Images, Video and Audio

Here's the FAAN Mail video about "Birthday Song" that we watched to talk about how media companies are often run by old white men who make money off of songs and videos that include representations of men and women of color that perpetuate stereotypes, degrade women and send negative messages to young people about sex, money and relationships.

The group says:
These videos are a response to “Birthday Song” and all other “hits” that dehumanize our people. We advocate for collective responsibility and urge one another to speak up, to talk back to powerful media corporations and to support media that values our humanity and diversity. Join the movement. #TALKBACK.

I hope you'll feel empowered to TALK BACK about any media that you think misrepresents you and your relationships.  And check out the other amazing FAAN Mail projects!  They rule!

Mon premier baiser

Mon, 03/18/2013 - 05:48

Relationship Violence in the Work Place

Thu, 03/07/2013 - 10:56
A few weekends ago, I was helping my dad clean out his office at the UW Med Center, and as I was re-labeling his file cabinet, I came across a folder titled "Staff Safety". I was pleasantly surprised when I found that the file contained a list of resources for workers if they are victims of abuse from a partner or co-worker. I discovered the UW requires all of their employees to be knowledgeable in relationship abuse, and are taught to recognize abusive sitiations in the work place. I think it is wonderful that this is a policy of the UW, and I believe all workplaces should provide information to their staff about how to handle such situations. It also made me think. I had never really taken into account that an abusive relationship could be between co-workers. How would you handle the situation if you or a fellow employee were being verbally or physically abused at work? How many people would know the right way to handle the situation? Is violence or abuse a common occurrence and the work place, and if so, how often does it remain unnotioced or unchecked? These are all questions I do not fully have answers to, and I would love some input. :) Cause:  ,

Life

Fri, 03/01/2013 - 21:34
Life is always difficult, it was never meant to be lived easy, otherwise you're not living right! And tis true! (Yes I said 'tis' not 'this' and nope they're not the same, it's me trying to speak old English c: and attempting to emphasis that point that it's very true). Anywho, life is always a twister, but just because it's difficult and you feel like giving up doesn't mean you should, just because the floor feels very comfortable doesn't mean you should stay there for eternity. Soon you'd lose blood circulation and this would eventually lead to a worse situation. Instead get up, and let your legs feel funny, it might be hard to stand, but at least you did, and now you begin to feel them. (This is all a metaphor) have you ever heard 'Try' by P!nk? It's such a great song. I will say this though: Staying Strong is so easy to say, but, it's the action that is so difficult to do. Much love <3 ~Tony <3 Cause:  , ,
